Tai Hang Auspicious
大坑龍虎鳳
About the project
The filter of Tai Hang Auspicious (Tai Hang Dragon Tiger Phoenix / 大坑龍虎鳳) was an AR filter in the project of “Small Valley Tai Hang” in “Arts in the City”. In this project, my duty was to cooperate with the local artist “HIRAHIRA” and design an immersive experience using digital media. The project involves the production of animation and the application of AR technology.
Application
The filter uses the filter feature of Instagram. By simply scanning the QR code on the artwork, the audience will be directed to the corresponding filter. In the filter, the user simply has to align their phone and follow the instructions. An animation will thus trigger. The whole filter was animated in Autodesk Maya and SparkAR studio was used for the AR input.

Project Vision
The choice of using an AR filter was to integrate the digital world into real-life artwork. My aim is to design an accessible and intuitive experience. I chose the 3 Auspicious (Dragon Tiger Phoneix) as the main character and used some elements of Tai Hang to reference the culture of Tai Hang and the theme of “Small Valley Tai Hang”.

Test Demo
Project Theme
The choice of 3 Auspicious was referenced from the culture and history of Tai Hang. The Dragon uses the famous Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, a traditional event of Tai Hang during the Mid-Autumn festival
The Auspicious was referenced according to the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, the Haw Par Mansion, and the Cacatua Galerita found in Tai Hang.

Challenges
Throughout the project, there were several challenges, including the placement of animation, the instruction, and the UX flow of the filter. The most challenging part will be compressing all the animation and AR functions into a usable size for the mobile device by decreasing the details while maintaining a pleasant form for the Auspicious.
